Years ago, while visiting my sister in New York we walked into a gallery in Chelsea to see the work of Ruud van Empel. At the time, the artist from Netherlands was unknown to us, but his images were immediately stunning and provocative. His images of children, Black children in particular, were so striking. It wasn't until later that I learned more about this artist's painstaking process to create these beautiful works of art.
His process for creating such pieces is filled with complexity. Models are professionally photographed in his studio along with images of foliage, flowers and animals that serve as models for his work. Clothing is photographed separately on a tailor's dummy. The graphic artist then brings the images together using Photoshop.
The pieces transport you to a kind of paradise, with children among leaves and palm fronds in the forest.
The life-like images are almost haunting as they blend the lines between the real and surreal.
